Did you know the ONS Foundation is the only foundation in the United States solely dedicated to the oncology nursing specialty?  For more than 25 years, the ONS Foundation has provided unwavering support to those who skillfully and compassionately deliver cancer care—oncology nurses.

Since its inception in 1982, the ONS Foundation has awarded more than $20 million in research grants, research fellowships, academic scholarships, lectures, public education projects, career development awards, and congress scholarships.

Conference Scholarships

Mary Scherbring ONS Institutes of Learning Conference Scholarships

The Mary Scherbring Conference Scholarship was established in 2007 by the Southeast Minnesota Chapter of ONS in memory of their colleague Mary Scherbring.  Mary, a long time member of the Southeast Minnesota Chapter, was an oncology nurse at the Mayo Clinic when she was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma in February 2007.  Mary, an advocate for oncology nursing continuing education, chaired the planning committee for the 2006 ONS Institutes of Learning conference.

  • Supports RNs who are interested in developing their career as an oncology nurse by attending the ONS Institutes of Learning Conference.
  • The applicant must be a registered nurse involved in cancer nursing.
  • The applicant must describe how their attendance at this conference will make a difference in their practice.
  • A biographical data sheet and essay addressing the applicant's role as an oncology nurse and how attending the ONS Institutes of Learning Conference will impact their practice and the patients in their care.  Applicants must address how they plan to share the information they learn with other nursing colleagues.   The essay must not exceed 350 words and must not have been previously submitted to the ONS Foundation for another award and funded. Word count must be inserted after the essay.
  • The applicant must be able to attend the conference specific for the award in its entirety.

  • To support a professional nurse interested in improving cancer care by developing their oncology nursing career by attending the ONS Congress

ONS Advanced Practice Nurse Conference Scholarship

  • Supports a professional nurse who has demonstrated innovation in responding to challenges in practice.
  • The applicant must be a registered nurse involved in cancer nursing.
  • The applicant must have demonstrated innovativeness in responding to challenges in practice.
  • The applicant can be nominated by an ONS Chapter or a Special Interest Group or be self-nominated. One nominee per Chapter and SIG only.
  • A biographical data sheet and a written description of the nurse's response to challenges in practice must be completed and submitted with the application.  The description must not exceed 350 words and must not have been previously submitted to the ONS Foundation for another award and funded.  Word count must be inserted after the essay.
  • The nominee must be able to attend ONS Conference, specific for the award, in its entirety.
  • If the applicant is a faculty member (speaker or poster presenter) for ONS APN Conference, the scholarship may not be applied to the conference registration. Faculty members living or working within a 50 mile radius of the conference are not eligible for this scholarship.

Note: Individuals that received a 2010 Congress Scholarship from the ONS Foundation are not eligible to receive this award in 2010. 

  • An individual cannot receive this award more than one time, per scholarship.

To provide financial support to individuals, groups, foundations, institutions, and ONS Chapters interested in developing and implementing a collaborative oncology nursing education or leadership initiative in their geographic area/region.

To encourage groups to work collaboratively outside their usual boundaries.
